What's in a name? Chinese Taipei vs Taiwan at the Olympics - A Conversation with Lindell Lucy
Background story:
Lindell saw my previous video discussing the unjust treatment of Taiwan at the Olympics. He reached out and asked if I would do a video drawing attention to this issue once again. I admitted that I’m not as knowledgeable as him on the subject and inquired if he would like to be the guest speaker. In the video, it is clear that Lindell took a strong stance against the Chinese government’s bullying. He also encouraged foreigners alike to stand with him. We drew a parallel between the misogynistic comment by an ex-Olympics committee member, Yoshiro Mori, and the demeaning name Chinese Taipei. Lastly, he calls out to the talented tennis player, Naomi Osaka, to support Taiwan.
Please see links below for the petition call and Lindell’s articles for the Taipei Times:

Asian Inferiority Complex? Internalized racism? Investigation in Taiwan
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 роки тому
The idea of inferiority complex has long puzzled me for ages. After moving back to Taiwan and being bombarded by all these western-race commercials, I thought I'd dig a little to see how it's manifested around town. Of course, this cannot be judged by a simple stroll around the streets and shops. However, there's no doubt that many businesses utilise this inferiority complex/internalized racism...
COVID-19 Response: Is Taiwan Doing Anything Differently?
Переглядів 8123 роки тому
It's been over a year since the first Coronavirus outbreak in China. Taiwan has been praised left and right when it comes to our response to the pandemic. We have had 942 cases and 9 deaths (Up to Feb 23, 2021) despite having a population of 23.8 million. How did Taiwan do it? Actually, I am still quite puzzled by how we have managed to maintain the low numbers. Though, I haven't been outside o...

How My Christian Conversion turned into Therapy Session: Shame, Guilt and Sexual Morality

Earlier today, I was reading this book called Pure. The author described her experience and others like her who had lived the purity culture. As an evangelical Christian, she was told to keep her virginity intact until marriage. This triggered a lot of emotions in me, and I just had to let it out by talking through my experience. My intention is to speak to those out there who carry the weight ...
Taiwanese Identity: Who We Are is Beyond Politics

It didn't surprise me to read the news about the unfair treatment Taiwanese employees were facing speaking up for Taiwan. What shook me was the fact that it happened in Australia, where personal viewpoint or freedom of speech should not be a justification of laying off an employee. After reading the Taiwanese Psyche written by a Taiwanese psychologist, many things started to make sense. The Feb...

Most Common Greeting Phrase in Taiwan: You Gained Weight

The idea of confronting someone about their weight changes seems to be rooted deep in the Taiwanese culture. Is People the Most Beautiful Scenery in Taiwan?

"The Most Beautiful Scenery in Taiwan is its People." We pride ourselves for this sentiment ever since I was old enough to remember. I know HK well and have live there for a few years. I had even stayed with a few HK colleagues when I was working in Malaysia. I will say that basically HK people are very flexible, sometimes even to the point of hypocrisy. Before 1997, all HK people will say they are Hongkongers and worshipped the whites, and same time looked down on the mainlanders. After 1997, they will call themselves Chinese and call China their fatherland. Yes, they can just throw a switch that fast. Just a few days' ago, I was in Hong Kong on a business trip and stayed in a hotel. I was going up to my room, and was first to enter the lift, when I saw a group of maybe 4 persons rushing to enter the lift. I immediately pressed the "OPEN" button and told them nicely that I will hold the lift and say to them no need to rush. When they entered the lift, I expected them to say a word of thanks but all 4 of them kept quiet. As the y stayed on a lower floor, they got out first and again they kept quiet and not even eyeing at all. Logically speaking, I thought they would at least say a word of thanks either upon entering or leaving the lift, but none of them said anything. I find this very strange. Whether or not they are Hongkongers or China mainlanders, I don't know becoz none of them said a word while in the lift. Is it part of their lives to take things for granted or just plain rude ? I don't know.

I once knew a girl who went by Judy in class. Her Chinese mother pronounced it like 脚底. The girl didn't like it, apparently, and told her classmate. Her classmate didn't understand. So, the girl raised her feet to illustrate what she meant. Suffice it to say, the girl changed her name to Julie.

I don't think Hong Kong people are rude. They're just straightforward and blunt. People are working and under pressure. Money is everything. Go to New York or Paris. It's the same way. As long as you're not too rude, then they won't be rude to you. I was eating dim sum at a small restaurant and this lady next to me starting yelling at the staff in Cantonese. The staff yelled back at her in Cantonese. So just be respectful and don't ask for too much and it's fine.

I think the older generation is somewhat prejudice towards anyone that speaks Mandarin since most Mandarin speakers were from Mainland China. Back in the days, other than Cantonese, English was the second language, not Mandarin. But in todays younger to middle generation, more HK folks have learned Mandarin in school (required by the government), so there are more people that know Mandarin more so than English. Just like in France, a lot of folks have learned English as a second language and are extremely fluent, they would just prefer that you speak to them in French or at least try to when first communicating. Once they figure out you are not a native French speaker (but tried speaking French) and realize that you know English, they usually are very open to start speaking in English to you. Same goes for HK when it comes to speaking Cantonese, English and Mandarin.

I read many commenters using fast paced of life as an excuse. A person being rude is not a matter of how fast paced their society is. It is a reflection of their cultural upbringing or the lack of it. Though I suspect the reasons for their rudeness and frustrations were the results of STRESS living in those inhumanely build TINY apartments. I actually thought that it was based on a Buddhist belief, just like burning the body releases the soul, then I studied it and found out that the practice can be traced back to 200 BC, that is 1000 years before Buddhism xD so that destroyed that theory. :-D Then I learned that the Hanshi festival from the Tang dynasty was integrated into the Qingming festival. Just like how the 上巳节 was integrated into the Hanshi festival before it. Activities such as Qushui Liushang, spring outings, as well as taking a bath to rid of the filth and so on still spread down through each iteration of the festivals. :-) Festivals such as the double-third festival from the Tang dynasty got updated from scratch in the Song dynasty. This is why the Qingming festival got updated as well. The Song tried to unite the different customs. In some provinces Qingming was to take a bath and get rid of the filth, while in Jiangxi people went out with boxes of wine and had a blast on the greenery, but then again in Anhui people would have dragon boat races or build land boats Fuzhu, these were religious activities of eliminating disasters and begging for blessing. :-D There is not a single culture and there has never been a single culture. That is the beauty of it all. :-) you do you, and I do me. :-D
